How to Do the Exercise

Setup

Lie on your back with the working leg straight and relaxed on the surface.

How to perform it

Tighten the front of your thigh and gently press the back of the knee toward the surface. Hold the contraction while breathing normally, then fully relax before repeating.

Dosage

2 sets, 10 repetitions with 5-second hold, Rest 30 seconds

Use it well

What to Focus On

Key cues

  • Tighten the front of the thigh
  • Gently press the back of the knee toward the surface
  • Breathe normally and fully relax between repetitions

Why use it

Restores quadriceps activation and improves active knee-extension control after pain, swelling, injury, or surgery.

When to use it

Useful when quadriceps activation or active knee-extension control is reduced.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the knee into pain
  • Substituting with the hip or glute muscles
  • Holding your breath during the contraction
Adjust the challenge

Know When to Progress or Scale Back

Use your movement quality and symptom response to decide whether the current version still fits.

Progress when

  • The contraction is strong and consistent across the set
  • You can maintain the hold without compensation
  • Symptoms settle appropriately after the exercise

Scale back if

  • You cannot hold a smooth contraction for at least a few seconds
  • Pain or swelling remains meaningfully worse afterward
  • You rely on hip or trunk compensation to create the contraction
Quick Fit Check

Was This the Right Challenge Today?

Use the same three signals that matter inside Therapeutic Edge recovery plans: how challenging the exercise felt, how well you controlled it, and how your body responded afterward.

Answer after the exercise and, when possible, after you know your later or next-day response. This checks one exercise today; it does not change or save a rehab plan.
