What to Focus On

Key cues

  • Step forward under control
  • Keep the front foot planted
  • Keep the front knee tracking with the foot
  • Push back through the front leg

Why use it

Builds unilateral strength and controlled forward stepping for daily and community movement.

When to use it

Useful when stationary split-squat strength is established and a forward stepping challenge is appropriate.

Common mistakes

  • Taking an uncontrolled or overly long step
  • Letting the front knee collapse inward
  • Pushing mainly from the rear leg
  • Rushing the return
Adjust the challenge

Know When to Progress or Scale Back

Use your movement quality and symptom response to decide whether the current version still fits.

Progress when

  • You can control the step, lowering phase, and return
  • The front leg does most of the work
  • Symptoms settle appropriately afterward

Scale back if

  • The forward step is difficult to control
  • The front knee buckles or balance becomes unsafe
  • Pain or swelling remains meaningfully worse afterward
Quick Fit Check

Was This the Right Challenge Today?

Use the same three signals that matter inside Therapeutic Edge recovery plans: how challenging the exercise felt, how well you controlled it, and how your body responded afterward.

Answer after the exercise and, when possible, after you know your later or next-day response. This checks one exercise today; it does not change or save a rehab plan.
